You say it's fine for them to be devastated, but how would you like to be misgendered all the time? Presuming you're male (with a name like David), how would it feel if everywhere you went you were referred to by both strangers and family alike as "she," "her," "Miss," "m'am," "young lady," or other such feminine language? I'm willing to bet you wouldn't really like it, and you wouldn't be so cavalier about people dismissing your "devastation." Maybe once or twice wouldn't phase you, but if it was all day every day, you'd get pretty tired of it.
