Thanks for reading and responding, Jon. Certainly toxic masculinity is only one component of an already established, out-of-control problem. I believe there are many other factors to blame as well, but I chose to write on this one because it’s what my eyes have been opened to throughout the course of raising a trans non-binary kid.
You are correct, only America has this degree of gun violence, though other countries have even worse accepted toxic masculine culture than we do. I believe the NRA and the type of fear-mongering they (and the current administration) engage in plays a HUGE role.
Thank you for your service to our country. I give you my utmost respect. And I thank you so much for saying that you “couldn’t understand why civilians needed anything more than hunting arms.” I cannot understand either. I’ve heard only one argument for it, and even that was shoddy. One man claimed he needed an AR-15 to shoot the massive amount of deer congregating on his property/farms out in the country because they were so plentiful and they moved way too fast. Other than that, I’ve never heard any other arguments for civilians owning military grade weapons other than, “I like my guns; you can’t take my guns — 2nd amendment!”
And on your point that people who carry weapons for defense over the perceived threat of danger are “frightened rabbits” — also an excellent point. I mean, certainly there are times when people really are in true danger, but I don’t think being locked & loaded all the time, ready to shoot is the answer. Thanks for your feedback.
